JAKARTA, – The Civil Society Coalition for Security Sector Reform filed a complaint with the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) regarding alleged bribery in the purchase of a former Qatar Air Force Mirage 2000-5 fighter aircraft.

“After we checked, it was true that there was a report in question,” said Head of the KPK News Section, Ali Fikri, when confirmed in Jakarta, quoted from the Antara news agency, Tuesday (13/2).

Ali said that his party could not provide further comments regarding the complaint, because the complaint would only be verified by the relevant team at the anti-corruption agency.

“Of course, next we will verify according to the provisions first by the Public Complaints Section at the Deputy for Information and Data of the Corruption Eradication Commission,” he said.

The reporting party, which calls itself the Civil Society Coalition for Security Sector Reform, consists of the Indonesian Legal Aid and Human Rights Association (PBHI), Imparsial, Indonesia Corruption Watch (ICW), Transparency International Indonesia (TII), Centra Initiative, Elsam, Walhi Nasional, Setara Institute, HRWG, Lingkar Madani, and KontraS.

On a separate occasion, PBHI Chairman Julius Hebrew emphasized that the coalition made a complaint to the KPK so that the issue became clear, not to create debate in society.

“The sole aim, because this is related to the state budget, is of course to make this issue clean and clear, not just a debate in political circles that ends in nothing and does not provide any benefits for the Indonesian people,” said Julius.

Julius also said that he and the coalition fully trusted the KPK to follow up on his complaint.

“We have prepared a report by collecting information and collecting documentation which we think is sufficient for the Corruption Eradication Commission to carry out investigations in accordance with its authority. “So whether the documentation information we submit is valid or not, of course the Corruption Eradication Committee has more authority to declare that,” he said.

Previously, the Indonesian Ministry of Defense explained that all news and information regarding bribery in the purchase of Mirage 2000-5 fighter aircraft from the former Qatar Air Force was fake news or a hoax because the purchase of defense equipment was cancelled.

Deputy Minister of Defense Lt. Gen. TNI (Ret.) M. Herindra, during a press conference at the Ministry of Defense Office, Jakarta, Monday (12/2), confirmed that the cancellation of the purchase of 12 Mirage 2000-5 units was due to fiscal or budget limitations. “The planned purchase of the Mirage 2000-5 has not occurred due to limited fiscal space,” he said.

In the last few days, it has been rumored that the Indonesian Ministry of Defense and Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto were involved in bribery in the purchase of used Mirage 2000-5 fighter aircraft from Qatar.

Defense Minister Prabowo is also said to have colluded with Greek politician and member of the European Parliament Eva Kaili.

Eva is currently still facing a corruption scandal involving several officials from Qatar. The case became known as “Qatargate”.

At the press conference, Defense Minister Spokesperson Dahnil Ahzar Simanjuntak also emphasized that Defense Minister Prabowo, the Ministry of Defense and the Indonesian government did not know Eva, let alone communicate with her.

“I don’t know who she is,” said Dahnil when asked whether there had been any communication with Eva during the purchase of defense equipment. (Kmb/Balipost)
