Christmas lights in Lisbon will be on from November 30th to January 6th

The Christmas lights in Lisbon will open on November 30th and will remain on until Twelfth Day, January 6th, operating with reduced hours to save and energy efficiency, the city council said this Monday.

“Lisbon will be lit in traditional locations, including squares, streets and avenues, using low-consumption lamps with LED technology, allowing an energy saving of around 80% compared to incandescence technology”, indicated the municipality, in response to the agency Lusa.

According to the Lisbon City Council (CML), the inauguration of the Christmas lights is scheduled for November 30th, at 7pm, at Terreiro do Paço, and “will be followed by a concert by the Angels, with Christmas themes, and a fireworks”, with free entry.

As in previous years, the “Christmas Illuminations” initiative is promoted through a protocol between the municipality and the Union of Commerce and Services Associations (UACS), with an investment of 749,500 euros, “the same value as in recent years” , said the municipality, under the presidency of Carlos Moedas (PSD).

“The CML, continuing energy saving and efficiency measures, will maintain the operation of the Christmas lights with reduced hours, as last year, but bringing them forward by half an hour, at the request of traders and UACS”, he said.

According to the municipality, Christmas lights times are from 5:30 pm to 11:00 pm on Sundays, Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays; from 5:30 pm to midnight on Fridays and Saturdays; and from 5:30 pm to 1:00 am on Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve.

In addition to low-consumption lamps with LED technology, “CML always seeks to opt for guarantees in the use of the latest saving techniques, either through the use of more efficient materials or through the use of renewable energy during production”.

The Lisbon Chamber also highlighted that the “Christmas Illuminations” initiative is a moment in which many traders hope to enhance their business areas, in order to “achieve more and better commercial offer, and for this it is essential to promote mechanisms that contribute to the increased movement on the streets and in stores”.

“Christmas lights have been one of the highlights of stimulating commerce in Lisbon and constitute a tradition deeply rooted in all those who live and work there, taking on added importance due to the high number of tourists and visitors who, every year, At this time, they visit the city”, highlighted the municipality.

Within the scope of the protocol with UACS, the municipality of Lisbon is responsible for promoting and supporting the development of activities and the holding of events related to economic activity, as well as the dynamization of public space, together with the sector’s associative entities.

To celebrate the Christmas season, the chamber will install the traditional Christmas pine tree in Praça do Comércio, as well as an installation in the shape of a Christmas ball in Largo Camões, 12 meters high and which will create light effects in different colors
