Families of Israeli prisoners called on lawmakers to stop the proposed law to impose the “death penalty on terrorists” and stated that a law to be passed in its current form could endanger their relatives currently held hostage in Gaza.

Gil Dikman, whose cousin is held captive in Gaza, addressed far-right Minister Ben-Gvir and said, “I begged you not to take advantage of our pain. This law will be counterproductive when the lives of our loved ones are in danger and the sword is on their necks.” said.

Ben-Gvir, on the other hand, did not step back on the bill and claimed that the bill presented by his party, on the contrary, “encourages the return” of the captives.

The father of an Israeli prisoner stated that the extreme right-wing MPs, his partner in power, wanted to pass this bill only “to kill Arabs” and said: “You have already killed enough. Stop talking about killing Arabs, start talking about saving Jews.” said.

Israeli MP Almog Cohen, who was seen hitting the table from time to time, said to one of the relatives of the captive, “Pain is not in your monopoly.” he said.

According to Israeli media, Almog Cohen left the session shortly after the discussion.

On the other hand, opposition leader and former prime minister Yair Lapid reacted to the far-right MPs in the coalition for the words they used against the relatives of the captives.

In his statement on the social media platform X, Lapid criticized the coalition government and the deputies in the session with the following statements:

“The families of the kidnapped people are crying out about their own pain and the pain of the whole country. There is no limit to the dullness and shamelessness of the negligent coalition members who give moral lessons to the families. What Almog Cohen did today will be remembered forever. He should be ashamed of himself.”

The bill in question, submitted by Member of Parliament Limor Son Har-Meleh from the far-right government partner Otzma Yehudit (Jewish Power) Party, was passed in the preparatory session of the Parliament last March, despite the opposition of the government’s legal advisor Gali Baharav-Miara, but did not meet any other requirements required for it to become law. There were no sessions.

In Israel, where there is no death penalty, far-right coalition parties want people affiliated with Hamas to be tried for terrorism crimes and sentenced to death penalty.

MPs such as National Security Minister Ben-Gvir, Har-Melech, Cohen and Fogel draw attention with their racist and discriminatory rhetoric and policies that they frequently use against Palestinians.
