TPO – On the afternoon of April 3, Mr. Nguyen Phi Da – Chief of Office of Dong Thap Provincial People’s Committee said that the Provincial People’s Committee has closed the sand mine and assigned it to the mining enterprise in An Nhon commune (Chau Thanh) to serve the North-South expressway, Can section. Previously, in September 2023, the People’s Committee of Dong Thap province granted a license to exploit sand mines on the Tien River section through An Nhon commune, Chau Thanh district for mining enterprises to supply sand for the construction of high-component projects. North – South expressway section Can Tho – Hau Giang – Ca Mau. Mining licenses are issued to highway construction contractors according to a specific mechanism. The mining capacity of this sand mine is more than 547,000 m3/year.

Explaining the temporary suspension of exploitation of the above sand mine, Mr. Nguyen Phi Da – Chief of the Office of Dong Thap Provincial People’s Committee said that due to recent errors in sand mining at An Nhon mine. The contractor locally exploited deeper than the allowed level, so the province requested a suspension to review the exploitation reserves.

Dong Thap Provincial People’s Committee has set up two parallel inspection teams at An Nhon sand mine, periodically inspected by the Provincial Police, and independently inspected by the Department of Natural Resources and Environment. Through inspection, it was initially determined that there were errors and overexploitation.

Specifically, in the mining area, some places are over-exploited, some places have not yet detected errors. “The sectors are synthesizing to report to the Provincial People’s Committee. For now, the sand mine will still be closed. If it is discovered that it is wrong, the mine will be closed immediately. The enterprise must be responsible for compensating the sand mined in excess of that reserve. If there is no overall violation, exploitation will be allowed again,” Mr. Da said.

Regarding sand sources for projects in the province, the representative of Dong Thap Provincial People’s Committee said that the whole province has 7 sand mines being exploited to serve the construction of the Can Tho – Hau Giang – Ca Mau expressway project, there is no mine. Which sand serves projects in the province?

To have sand for local projects, Mr. Da said, the province is regulating the source of reclaimed sand from a project to regulate the flow of some rivers and canals with more than 300,000m3 of sand to serve projects in the province. However, the above amount of sand does not meet the actual needs of local projects.

In addition, according to Mr. Da, by September 2024, when procedures for granting other sand mines are completed, more than 2.3 million m3 of sand will be added to serve construction. In fact, constructions and projects in Dong Thap province also have very difficult sand sources.
