A statement came from the Ministry of Commerce regarding the unfair price increases for bread. The Ministry warned, “Speculative price movements on the price of bread, which is the basic food item for our citizens, directly affects the general welfare of the society.” And it was reminded that as a result of practices exceeding the bread price tariff in 81 provinces, especially Istanbul, administrative fines ranging from 100 thousand liras to 1 million liras were imposed on businesses selling bread.

The Ministry underlined that the price tariffs of the breads offered to the market are put into effect by the chambers of commerce and chambers of tradesmen. And it was stated that “Price tariffs are determined based on the maximum sales price of bread, and when complaints are received about pricing above these determined tariffs, the necessary inspections are immediately carried out by the inspection teams of the Ministry of Commerce.”

It was stated that the audit results detected as exorbitant price practices were evaluated as “unfair price increase” by the Unfair Price Evaluation Board of the Ministry of Commerce and the necessary administrative fines were applied. “In this regard, we would like to underline that any unfair gain or opportunism will not be tolerated regarding bread, which is the basic food of our people. As the Ministry of Commerce, we carry out our work meticulously and take every precaution to prevent our citizens from suffering.”
