REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, FLORENCE — Fiorentina took a step closer to the Coppa Italia final with a 1-0 win at home over Atalanta in the first leg of the semifinals, Thursday (4/4/2024). A long-range goal from midfielder Rolando Mandragora in the first half secured victory at the Artemio Franchi Stadium.

Fiorentina, who lost last year’s final to Inter Milan 2-1, are bidding to lift the club’s first trophy since they won the Coppa Italia in 2001.

Mandragora put Vincenzo Italiano’s men ahead in the 31st minute with a brilliant shot from outside the box, which bounced off the post. His goal, scored from 27.6 meters, was the longest goal scored by Fiorentina this season in all competitions.

His previous goal from a longer distance was Cristiano Biraghi’s long-range shot against Hellas Verona in February 2023 in Serie A.

Fiorentina, who have reached the semi-finals of the competition in three consecutive seasons for the first time, controlled the proceedings. However, only four of the 20 attempts were on target.

They should have doubled their lead before the hour mark through winger Nicolas Gonzalez. He fired a header that looked unstoppable, but Atalanta goalkeeper Marco Carnesecchi made a brilliant save to palm the ball away.

Atalanta had one of the best chances to equalize in the 66th minute when Ademola Lookman fed Mitchel Bakker in the penalty box. Unfortunately, the Dutch defender’s shot went narrowly wide of the far post.

“The final is just one step away, even if we manage to score one more goal, the match will still be difficult. Atalanta at home closes you down in your own defense. We know that we have to play an extraordinary match there,” Italiano told Mediaset.

The day before, Juventus took a 2-0 lead over Lazio in the first semifinal. The second legs will be played on April 23 and 24 before the final is held at Rome’s Stadio Olimpico in May.
