Juan Martínez Munuera – the referee of the VAR, who did not allow the Ukrainian national football team to participate in Euro-2024

The same referee was responsible for the video assistant referee system (VAR) in the last two decisive matches of the Ukrainian national football team. Spaniard Juan Martinez Munuera was behind the monitors in the games of Ukraine with Wales in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers and Ukraine with Italy in the Euro 2024 qualifiers.

The 41-year-old native of Valencia did not recommend to the chief referees of those matches to review the moment with potential fouls against Yarmolenko and against Mudryk.

Note that Munuera started his career in 2006 from the second division of the Spanish championship. In 2013, he served his first match in the Primera Division. In 2015, he was included in the list of FIFA judges.

After this information spread on the network, users began to invent photo frogs, calling Munuer a “murderer” of the Ukrainian national team.

As reported by OBOZ.UA, the Ukrainian national team lost to Wales and could not qualify for the 2022 World Championship. One of the key episodes was called an unassigned penalty for a foul on the captain of the “yellow and blue” Yarmolenko in the 40th minute of the match.

Then the Spanish referee Antonio Mateu Laos admitted that he did not review the moment with the fall of the captain of the Ukrainian national team, because Munoyer did not invite him.

A similar episode happened in the match against Italy on November 20, 2023. In the third compensated minute of the second half of the game, the referee Jesus Gil Manzano did not award a 11-meter penalty for the fall of Chelsea midfielder Mikhail Mudryk in the opponent’s penalty area.

The match between Ukraine and Italy eventually ended in a 0-0 draw, which put the Italians in the final tournament and left us a path through the playoffs.
