Senior Lecturer, Department of Oceanology, Moscow State University. M.V. Lomonosov Sergey Mukhametov, in a conversation with Pravda.Ru, told how to protect yourself from sharks while on vacation at sea. According to the expert, it is important to be careful and constantly look around in the habitats of marine predators.

“If you see a fin, then evacuate. When a shark is looking for prey, it is at the surface of the water, and the fin is clearly visible. When it has already chosen a victim and attacks, it dives and attacks from an invisible zone – from below and from the side,” he said, noting that the behavior of the shark from the famous film “Jaws” does not correspond to reality.

Mukhametov added that if the shark has already attacked, it will be difficult to escape, but there is a chance – you can try to hit the predator hard in the nose or eye, then it will fall behind. The oceanologist clarified that sharks are attracted to sudden movements, the smell of blood or vomit, and are indifferent to colored swimsuits.

“She is attracted to sudden movements. Especially when a person in a panic moves his limbs randomly. And the smell of blood or vomit,” he said and emphasized that the most effective safety measure in the event of shark activity would be not to enter the water.
