By the end of 2024, Poland will start building the first elements of defense fortifications on its borders with Russia and Belarus as part of the “Eastern Shield” project.

Poland plans to strengthen its northern and eastern borders by creating defense lines, systems of surveillance, reconnaissance and protection against drones, and will allocate $2.6 billion for this by the end of 2028, the Polish Minister of Defense reported Cesary Tomchyk during the press conference, writes Reuters.

“In the next three weeks, we will be able to conduct the first tests of the elements of the “Eastern Shield” on Polish military training grounds, and this year we will also begin the construction of the first elements on the northern and eastern borders,” Tomchyk noted.

The project will be implemented in cooperation with Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, as well as with British and American forces, the minister added.

The Polish military began to install barbed wire on the section of the Polish-Belarusian border in Zubzyce-Welka to prevent migrants from entering the country.

The future fence will be erected with a height of 2.5 meters and a length of 180 km, which is almost half of the total length of the forest border between the two states.
