‘WE WERE NOT EVEN FREE IN THE SKIES OF OUR COUNTRY’

Selçuk Bayraktar, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of T3 Foundation, met with university students at the talk organized by Recep Tayyip Erdoğan University (RTEÜ) in Rize, where he went after his program at Trabzon KTÜ. Addressing the students at the RTEÜ congress center, Bayraktar said, “We were one of the countries that were almost completely dependent on foreign countries in aviation. When we look back 20 years ago, Turkey was 85 percent dependent on abroad in the defense industry. In our time, when I sit in university desks like you, my biggest talent is to be a maintenance engineer in a foreign company.” Let alone developing a high-tech product nationally, we do not have such self-confidence, and the most we could do was to be the implementer of a technology developed by foreigners. This was the biggest horizon and skill. Everyone thought this was a skill. The biggest skill for us was to buy a plane developed by foreigners and put it on the assembly line. and when the day came, they were saying the following about that inventory: ‘You can’t fly here. You can’t fly there. If you do this, I will put an embargo. If you do that, I won’t take the plane off the ground. They were saying, ‘When the day comes, when you pull the trigger, that plane won’t even release its ammunition.’ In other words, we weren’t even free. Our country was in its skies. He wasn’t even free. Baykar has developed its technologies for this purpose since the first day so that our country’s skies can be independent. “Bayraktar, which currently makes the world’s most advanced brand 5 times more than its closest rival in its class, produced TB2, and later Akıncı and Kızılelması, entirely with its own resources,” he said.

‘THERE IS NO SUCH DEFENSE COMPANY IN THE WORLD’

Saying that they have made the best airplanes in the world in their class, Bayraktar said, “We have built the best airplanes in the world in their class in 10 years. ‘TB3 WAS ENTIRELY DEVELOPED NATIONAL AND LOCAL’
