Euronews: US and Chinese presidents Joe Biden and Xi Jinping discussed tensions over Taiwan, the development of artificial intelligence and security issues during a phone call on Tuesday.

The White House described Joe Biden’s conversation with his Chinese counterpart as “candid and constructive”. The telephone conversation on Tuesday was the first contact between the leaders of the two countries since their meeting in the US state of California in November last year.

In this telephone conversation, Xi Jinping said that the United States and China should adhere to the principle of “no conflict, no confrontation” as one of the principles of this year.

The Chinese president said: “We should give priority to stability and not create problems, not cross lines, but maintain the overall stability of China-US relations.”

In his conversation with Joe Biden, Xi Jinping referred to Taiwan as “the first red line that should not be crossed.” Joe Biden also criticized Beijing’s actions in the South China Sea.

The US President is scheduled to host Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida at the White House next week. The increasing influence and movements of China in the East Asian region will be one of the axes of the tripartite meeting in Washington.

US and Chinese leaders have already agreed to hold formal talks on the opportunities and challenges of using artificial intelligence. These talks are scheduled to take place in the coming weeks.

Cooperation in the fight against fentanyl trafficking was another topic that Joe Biden and Xi Jinping discussed with each other.

Joe Biden’s phone call with Xi Jinping will be the beginning of a new era of talks and negotiations between the two countries. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken are scheduled to visit China in the coming days and weeks.
