The President of Cyprus asked Germany to influence Turkey for the reunification of the island

Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulidis, during negotiations with German counterpart Frank-Walter Steinmeier on February 12, called on Berlin to influence Turkey in order to facilitate a faster solution to the problem of divided Cyprus.

This is reported by “European Truth” with reference to DPA.

After talks with the President of Germany in the Cypriot capital of Nicosia, Christodoulidis told reporters: “Our message is that the solution (of the Cyprus problem. – Ed.) lies in Ankara.”

“The time has come to work with new strength on the solution of the Cyprus issue,” Steinmeier said in his turn, stressing that Germany supports the solution of the Cyprus problem based on the parameters of the UN on the coexistence of two communities within one state.

He also expressed his willingness to support the UN-led negotiation process between Cyprus, Turkey and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus controlled by him, which recently appointed a special envoy on the Cyprus issue.

“We in Germany, at least, are ready to support the negotiation process under the leadership of the UN and to promote confidence-building measures,” the German president assured.

In 1974, there was a coup in Cyprus by supporters of the reunification of the island with Greece. In response, Turkey occupied the northern part of Cyprus, where the unrecognized state of Northern Cyprus was later declared (only Turkey recognizes its independence).

Since then, there have been numerous negotiations with the mediation of the UN regarding the reunification of Cyprus, but they have not brought any real results. Northern Cyprus insists on unification with Cyprus under the terms of a federation, while the Cypriot authorities reject such plans, fearing the growth of Turkish influence.

Nikos Christodoulidis, who became the president of Cyprus last year, repeatedly called for intensifying negotiations regarding the peace process on the island.
