— My husband Darek and our son Gracjan went before dinner to the forest to pick mushrooms, where they went many times, 10 minutes from our house. Unfortunately, if they had left a minute later or earlier, our lives would be normal today, says Mrs. Agnieszka, wife of 37-year-old Dariusz.
On the way to the forest, a tree suddenly fell on the man’s car. His 17-year-old son escaped from the accident with only minor injuries. The branch hit mainly from the driver’s side, trapping Dariusz inside. Firefighters called to the scene had to cut out the vehicle’s door to get the man out. The 37-year-old suffered serious injuries and was transported by an LPR helicopter to a hospital in Rzeszów.
Dariusz first underwent complicated spine surgery. As a result of the accident, there was a multi-comminuted fracture of the upper vertebra with displacement of fragments, a fracture of the C3 vertebrae, a multi-comminuted fracture of the C4 vertebra, and a fracture of all columns of the spine at the C5 and C6 positions.
