Ukraine’s entry into NATO – the invitation of Ukraine to NATO will be equal to membership – Jens Stoltenberg

In the EU, when a country receives an invitation, it can take years before it becomes a member. In NATO, when we invite, it happens soon.

This was stated by Alliance Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg at the press conference following the results of the first day of the meeting of ministers. According to him, all NATO allies agreed to eliminate the stage of implementation of the Membership Action Plan.

“All NATO allies have agreed that Ukraine will become a member of NATO. It is important to preserve this path to membership for Ukraine. But this means: as soon as such an invitation is made, it will be equal to membership in the Alliance,” Stoltenberg noted.

The Secretary General of the Alliance emphasized that there are clear commitments by the member states that Ukraine will become a member of NATO as soon as the war ends. But at the same time, everyone agrees that guarantees are needed that the war is really over. That Russia does not use the pause to resume and regroup its forces and start a new aggression.

He reminded that after the illegal annexation of Crimea and the seizure of part of Donbass, the Kremlin used the ceasefire to start a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in eight years.

“When this war ends, we must be sure that this is indeed its end. We must help Ukraine build its defenses to deter possible Russian aggression. Ukraine also needs security guarantees, such as Article 5 of the Washington Treaty and membership in NATO.” – noted Stoltenberg.

As OBOZ.UA wrote, France and the United States are “committed to unity” in the matter of prospects for Ukraine’s accession to NATO. Our country will join the North Atlantic Alliance in the future, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken assured.

Recently, Deputy Prime Minister Olga Stefanyshina said that America and Germany are key opponents of Ukraine’s invitation to join NATO. She argued that they do not create opportunities for the development of dialogue.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg stated that Kyiv is closer to NATO than ever before.
