On November 22, 2023, for the first time in Russia, the professional holiday of psychologists is officially celebrated at the federal level. The date was fixed by Decree of the Government of the Russian Federation of October 10, 2023 No. 1666. Mental health specialists previously considered this day theirs, although it was celebrated only by some organizations and educational institutions, and the main organizer of the events was Moscow University. The essence of the professional holiday is to popularize the profession of psychologist and remind us of the importance of psychological help. The decision to recognize the holiday on a professional level was approved by Russian President Vladimir Putin – he assessed the proposal as fair, saying that more attention should be paid to the development of psychological assistance services.

What significance does the date November 22 have for psychologists?

After Psychologist’s Day was included in the official list of federal professional holidays, the date of the event did not change. On November 22, psychologists began organizing events related to their activities back in 2000. The day was chosen because in 1994, on this date, the Founding Congress of the Russian Psychological Society, which emerged from the Society of Psychologists of the USSR and the Psychological Society, which was affiliated with the Imperial Moscow University, took place.
