10th anniversary of the Sewol Ferry disaster… Government holds ‘National Safety Day commemoration ceremony’

The government announced that it held the ’10th National Safety Day Commemoration Ceremony’ at the Government Sejong Convention Center on the 16th, the 10th anniversary of the Sewol Ferry disaster.

National Safety Day was established on April 16, the anniversary of the Sewol Ferry disaster, and commemorative ceremonies have been held since 2015 to recall the importance of safety and raise the level of safety awareness among the public.

In this event, hosted by the Ministry of Public Administration and Security, about 200 people from various classes and ages, including central ministries, local governments, public institutions, private organizations, and general citizens, participated to raise safety awareness and promise to practice safety.

The commemorative ceremony began with an opening declaration by the safety practice righteous under the theme of ‘Korea where everyone’s daily life is safe’, followed by a theme video screening, a speech by the prime minister, a reading of the safety practice oath, and a public safety promise performance.

Village chief Kwon Hyeok-ro (58), who was invited as a ‘safety practice righteous person’, saw the water flowing into the village at dawn, an hour before a landslide during heavy rain in July last year, and quickly woke up 16 residents from 10 households who had difficulty moving and evacuated them to the senior citizen center. Casualties were prevented.

Noh Ji-hoon (13), who joined in the declaration, quickly reported a fire that broke out at a restaurant in Goyang-si, Gyeonggi-do in January last year, encouraged evacuation, and played a big role in the initial fire extinguishment by passing fire extinguishers to adults nearby.

In the topic video sequence, the stories of Go Gwi-ju, the manager of the Jodo branch of Seojindo Agricultural Cooperative, who jumped into the sea and rescued people during a car crash, and businessman Kim Jong-ho, who rescued and provided first aid after witnessing a driver who lost consciousness while driving, were introduced.

At the National Safety Day event, side events were also held to help citizens raise safety awareness and develop safety capabilities in their daily lives.

Until the 17th, a ‘visiting safety experience class’ will be operated at the Government Sejong Convention Center and Lake Park Parking Lot 2, where children can experience safety education (22 types indoors, 8 types outdoors) such as safe play methods and CPR. .

Until the 21st, an online event called ‘Safety Practice Competency Diagnosis’ will be held on the National Safety Education Platform where people can check their own safety living standards using the ‘Safety Practice Checklist’.

Minister of Public Administration and Security Lee Sang-min said, “The government will make the lives and safety of the people the top priority of the government, and will develop a national safety management system to preemptively prepare for various disasters and accidents and minimize damage.”
