The 2024 vintage is revealed. The 77th Cannes Film Festival presents its official selection this Thursday morning for this new edition of the most famous film festival in the world which will be held from May 14 to 25.
The announcement is made by Thierry Frémaux, general delegate of the festival, who is in the company of Iris Knobloch, the president. The 2024 vintage is particularly anticipated after the great story of the 2023 Palme d’Or, “Anatomy of a Fall” by Justine Triet, Oscar for best screenplay in March.
In her introductory remarks, Iris Knobloch praised a particularly significant 2023 edition, “the edition of all records”. While presenting the arrangements for the 77th festival, Iris Knobloch described Camille Cottin, who will be mistress of the opening and closing ceremonies, as a “brilliant and committed woman, French pride”. She also took “our hats off to the festival teams”, who work “year after year”.
The official selection announced Thursday is “the result of the screening of 2000 films in total, which we have all seen,” says Thierry Frémaux.
George Lucas Honorary Palme d’Or
Greta Gerwig, director of “Barbie”, will chair the jury for this 2024 edition and Camille Cottin will be the mistress of the opening and closing ceremonies. George Lucas, 79 years old, father of the “Star Wars” saga, inspiration for “Indiana Jones” (launched behind the camera by Steven Spielberg), will receive the honorary Palme d’Or during the closing ceremony.
Kevin Costner, returning to the western with “Horizon, An American Saga”, won his ticket, out of competition. Still out of competition, “Furiosa”, a new episode of “Mad Max” by George Miller (Australian, but assimilated to Hollywood), will take the stage with its stars Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth. The opening, also out of competition, will go to Quentin Dupieux, master of the shift, with “The second act”, with Léa Seydoux.
