As is usual in the four months of libertarian management, every time the index of inflation measured by Indec, which in March was 11%, highlighting a downward trend, different political readings are generated: euphoria in the ruling party and strong criticism from the opposition.

The national deputy José Luis Espert, a leader who started as a political partner of Javier Milei, then left and is now one of the main defenders of the ruling party, congratulated the President and the Minister of Economy, Luis Caputo.

“We must congratulate the President of the Nation and the Minister of Economy for the technical task and political courage of lowering inflation. No one can deny that there is a marked downward trend. We are on the good way. “Argentina has a future and that future is liberal!”, stated the liberal legislator on his social networks.

On the opposite side, the national representative, Gabriela Estévez from Córdoba (Unión por la Patria), accused the national government of “pushing millions of Argentines into poverty and destitution.”

The national legislator made a comparison between inflation and salary increases during the last four months.

“Inflation has accumulated 90.2% since Milei took office, more than double the minimum wage. Thus, the total basic basket of a typical family amounts to $773 thousand, against the $405 thousand that two minimum salaries add up to. They are pushing millions of Argentines into poverty and destitution,” said the Kirchnerist legislator from Córdoba.

Meanwhile, Juan Manuel Urtubey, from Salta, who supported Sergio Massa in the last presidential campaign, warned about the drop in the standard of living of the middle class and warned that “people cannot tolerate another disaster” like that of Alberto Fernández.

“The fight is not only against inflation, it is also for the Argentines. Lowering inflation and at the same time the standard of living of the middle class and the most disadvantaged does not seem to be the way. The previous government made a disaster, the people cannot stand another one,” said the former Peronist governor of Salta.

Dialogue request

From radicalism they made a comparison with the “heritage” of Alberto Fernández and launched a call for dialogue.

“Inflation of 11%, with an accumulation of 287.9% in the last 12 months, continues to be the main problem of Argentines. A number that reflects the inheritance received,” highlighted Senator Maxi Abad, who called for an agreement. “I repeat what I have been saying: it requires agreements and efforts from all political actors to combat it,” said the radical legislator.

Radical deputy Karina Banfi spoke out a little more restrained, remarking that “inflation continues to be the main problem of Argentines” and that “each point implies more people who cannot cover their basic needs.”

Salaries seemed to be precisely the favorite topic for those who questioned the Government.

Opposition representative Graciela Ocaña chose to retweet Indec itself with a claim that she extended to the payment of salaries for retirees.

“Although 11% may seem low, we cannot ignore that the accumulated inflation of the first quarter reaches 51.6%. The problem is that salaries and pensions are not adjusted to the same extent, and economic activity suffers because people simply do not have money,” said the opposition representative, referring to last month’s inflation number.
