Gyeongnam ruling and opposition party candidates ‘joyful’ at exit poll results for ‘Nakdong River Belt’

When the three broadcasting companies announced the results of the joint exit poll at 6 p.m. sharp on the 10th, when voting for the 22nd National Assembly election ended, there were mixed feelings of joy and sorrow among the camps of the ruling and opposition parties in the Gyeongnam region.

Yangsan-eul is a constituency in the ‘Nakdong River Belt’ where the ruling and opposition parties clash fiercely every election, and it has emerged as a national battleground as both the ruling and opposition parties are former governors of South Gyeongsang Province.
Election camp workers cheered when the results showed that candidate Kim Doo-gwan was ahead by a narrow margin over People Power Party candidate Kim Tae-ho, and was ahead in Kim Hae-gap, Kim Hae-eul, Changwon Seongsan, and Changwon Jinhae.
Candidate Kim Doo-kwan said, “During the 21st general election, the Democratic Party only won in Gimhae-gap, Gimhae-eul, and Yangsan-eul,” and added, “It is disappointing that five Gyeongnam provinces were ahead in the exit poll results, but it is meaningful in its own way.”
The election campaign of Democratic Party candidate Kim Jeong-ho in the ‘Nakdong River Belt’ Kim Hae-eul also cheered as if they were going to leave at the landslide victory result in which the Democratic Party was expected to secure a single majority and up to more than 200 seats.
When the exit polls in Kim Hae-gap and Gimhae-eul, following fierce battlegrounds across the country, including the metropolitan area, showed that both Democratic Party candidates had over 50% of the vote, Gimhae-eul candidate Kim Jeong-ho jumped up and made a clenched fist gesture.
Election camp workers applauded and chanted ‘Kim Jeong-ho’ and ‘Lee Jae-myeong.’
In addition, when predictions continued that the Democratic Party candidate would be ahead in close battles, such as Dongjak candidate Ryu Sam-young and Yongsan candidate Kang Tae-woong, he continued to exclaim “Wow~”.
However, they looked sad when the People Power Party candidate came in first place with more than 50% of the votes in more than 10 regions of Gyeongnam, excluding the ‘Nakdong River Belt’, Changwon Seongsan, and Changwon Jinhae.
Candidates Heo Seong-moo of Changwon Seongsan and Hwang Ki-cheol of Changwon Jinhae also appeared at the election office and cheered as they watched the exit poll results.
Gyeongnam People Power candidates expressed disappointment after exit polls showed that they were behind the Democratic Party candidate.
Kang Ki-yoon, a candidate for Changwon Seongsan, did not appear at the election office when the exit poll was announced.
The People Power Party cheered in the Geoje constituency, one of the battlegrounds in Gyeongnam.
People Power Party candidate Seo Il-jun watched the exit polls at home, but Candidate Seo’s supporters gathered at the election camp cheered.
Democratic Party candidate Byun Kwang-yong could not hide his embarrassment.
Candidate Byun, who watched the exit poll at his campaign office, did not say anything.
An official from Candidate Byeon’s camp said, “As we campaigned hard, we will have to keep watching until the results are over.”
