“Our democracy, won with blood, has been damaged to no end.”
Lee Jae-myeong, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, said, “The transition from democratization to dictatorship depends on this general election.”
Representative Lee posted on his Facebook page on the 10th, “It is difficult to even imagine what would happen if the regime that ruined the country like this in less than two years also took over legislative power. “Our democracy will be pushed to the point of no recovery,” he wrote.
Representative Lee said, “The stark democracy report card of the two years of Yoon Seok-yeol’s regime, which ‘silenced’ the people’s voice, has been revealed,” and added, “The ‘dictatorization’ of the Republic of Korea, which was said to be a leading democracy, is something that could not have been imagined even two years ago. “Is that so?” he said.
Representative Lee appears to have criticized the Yoon Seok-yeol government by citing the contents of a report recently published by the Swedish Institute for the Diversity of Democracy (V-dem), which described Korea as a ‘country undergoing a transition from democratization to dictatorship.’
Representative Lee said, “Our democracy, which we won with blood, is being ruined to no end,” and “The people are the same, but the ‘model democratic country’ that led the world has disappeared somewhere.” “We have become a country where people worry about whether they will be taken away if they do something wrong,” he pointed out.
Representative Lee said, “This is because the basic systems of the rule of law, separation of powers, and constitutional order that supported our society have rapidly collapsed due to the Yoon Seok-yeol administration’s abuse of power,” and “The president, who should take the lead in national unity, has waged an ideological war and oppressive prosecutorial rule has continued.” He emphasized, “Dialogue, compromise, and coexistence, the basics of democracy, have disappeared.”
Representative Lee claimed, “In the end, they are blatantly carrying out the worst ‘official election’ since the March 15 election fraud.”
He said, “I once again reflect on the enormous mission of this general election. “This election is not just an election to elect a member of the National Assembly to represent me,” he said, adding, “It will be a historical watershed that will determine whether Korea’s massive regression will continue to accelerate, or whether it will stop the ‘runaway runaway’ and move forward into the future.”
