He arrived as a free man to hear the verdict of the case in which he was the accused and left in handcuffs to sleep in prison. Moroccan singer Saad Lamjarred was sentenced on Friday, February 24, to six years in prison for aggravated rape by the Paris criminal court. He was found guilty of raping and assaulting Laura P., then 20, in a room at a Parisian luxury hotel on October 26, 2016. An aggravating circumstance was that he was under the influence of alcohol and narcotics. However, he was acquitted of the charge of aggravated intentional violence. He will be entered into the national registry of sexual offenders.

The jurors deliberated for seven hours after hearing the final words of the accused. On Friday morning, the 37-year-old singer took the stand for the last time. Insisting on speaking in French, he said: “I tried during this hearing to express myself, to tell you the truth from the bottom of my heart because I absolutely did not do what I was accused of. I insist, your honor, I never , never penetrated Laura P.”

Laura P. had met Lamjarred in an upscale nightclub in the Champs Elysées district. After hanging out for an hour, she had gone with him and another couple to an afterparty in the couple’s room in the Intercontinental hotel. For two hours, the four people had fun, danced, drank alcohol and did drugs – except for Laura P. Then she went with Lamjarred to the hotel where the Moroccan singer was staying before his concert, scheduled for October 29 at the Palais des Congrès .

The plaintiff and the accused spent three hours together, flirted, exchanged a kiss. When Laura P. refused a second kiss, the singer violently threw her to the ground, hit and undressed her before penetrating her “without her consent,” as the judge stressed. For his part, Lamjarred claims to have hit her as a reflex when she scratched him violently while they were caressing.

The young woman then took refuge in the bathroom and got dressed. As she was leaving, he tried to mollify her by offering her money and a bracelet, before attacking her again. She escaped from the room; the hotel staff protected her and called the police. She filed a complaint that morning.
