Could maternity support movements prove useful in this?
“No. Associations that propose to oblige women to listen to the heartbeat of the fetus before having an abortion violate the principles of secularism, self-determination and free access to the clinic base.”
What are the risks of such an approach?
«In such a difficult moment, meeting a Pro-lifer who focuses on guilt can be psychologically unsustainable. Especially for a teenager.”
Could this push a woman not to have an abortion?
“It may cause you pain, but it probably won’t change your mind. When law 194 did not exist, women risked their lives to have clandestine abortions.”
Do those who terminate a pregnancy do so mainly for economic reasons?
«They alone are not enough if a woman wants to have children. And certainly not even the subsidies advertised by the government are enough to convince her: for the first few months milk and diapers, then that’s it.”
And what are the reasons?
«There can be many. Students often came to my clinic who became pregnant at the wrong time in their lives, when they were embarking on a career plan or were not in stable relationships. But I also remember a very young girl, around 18, who made the opposite choice.”
How did it go?
«The mother was very hesitant, because her daughter and boyfriend were very young and without work. She, however, had few doubts and after the consultation she decided to keep him.”
