The snow returns to the mountains and the ski resorts are celebrating: slopes open until Easter. Avalanche danger in South Tyrol

The dry climate that characterized the entire month of February left room at the beginning of March for heavy snowfalls which are reviving a ski season that started late. The prospect of the lifts now being to remain open at least until Easter, supported not only by artificial snow but also by real snow, which hasn’t been seen for a while.

Women’s Super G canceled in Val di Fassa

The tourism sector is celebrating, but there is no shortage of inconveniences. In Val di Fassa, for example, snowfall forced the cancellation of the Women’s Super G race weekend, pushing many fans from outside to turn back.

But finally, after months of absence, the planned snow on the ski slopes has been integrated with natural snow, which will allow the ski areas in the area to remain open at least for the whole of March, until Easter, and perhaps even beyond. Despite some setbacks, therefore, the ski lift and hotel sectors are confidently awaiting the arrival of the bad weather expected in the next few days.

In Val di Susa at least half a meter of snow

Even the disturbances arriving in the Alta Val di Susa in recent days should ensure a successful conclusion to the ski season, after months in which rainfall had been practically absent. At least half a meter of snow should settle on the slopes by Wednesday, while Oulx, Bardonecchia, Sestriere and Cesana have already gained several centimeters.

A quantity of snow sufficient to let skiers experience the true winter climate, even in the large ski areas in the area such as Bardonecchia and Vialattea.

The avalanche danger in South Tyrol

In the Val d’Adige area, until a few days ago the extreme drought had led to the issuing of a yellow alert due to the risk of fires. The following day the situation was reversed: in several provinces in the area the danger was that the heavy snowfall would cause avalanches. The alert level was strong in the upper Isarco valley and throughout the Pusteria, slightly lower in other mountain areas. A condition that has certainly replenished the snow cover on the slopes and also cleared the valley floor of fine dust.

But on the other hand it has also imposed several closures for public safety reasons. In recent days, the municipality of Courmayeur has ordered the closure and preventive evacuation of Val Ferret, starting from the La Palud barrier. But the Brenva area and the Val Veny return track and the Larzey/Entrèves municipal road are closed.

A section of state road 36 of Lake Como and Spluga, in the province of Sondrio, was also closed due to heavy snowfall.
