In the last 24 hours, around 1,200 migrants arrived on the Italian island of Lampedusa, once again causing the reception center to overcrowd, with more than 1,400 people.
Last Tuesday, the Italian Coast Guard rescued several small boats, while another boat, with 43 Sudanese, managed to reach one of the island’s coves independently.
During the night, more than 394 immigrants were intercepted by patrol boats from the Port Authority, Guardia di Finanza and a boat from Frontex, the European border control agency, and ended up disembarking on the island.
Thus, in total, 1,202 migrants arrived in Lampedusa in the last 24 hours, according to the media, having departed from Sfax, in Tunisia, and Sabratha and Zuara, in Libya.
Also during the night, the ship from the non-governmental organization (NGO) SOS Mediterranee, the Ocean Viking, arrived at the port of Ortona, in the central region of Abruzzo, with 128 migrants rescued in three operations off the coast of Libya, in the last days.
As has happened previously, the NGO denounced the allocation of a distant port by the Italian authorities so that migrants would have to face “three useless days of navigation”.
With these new arrivals, the island’s reception center, with capacity for around 300 people, welcomes 1,430 migrants, having begun operations to transfer them to other locations in Italy.
According to data updated on Tuesday by the Ministry of the Interior, 147,239 migrants arrived on the Italian coast, compared to 92,881 in the same period last year.
