Accusation: anti-Semitism allegations against Aiwanger: Markus Söder calls for clarification

The Süddeutsche Zeitung raises serious allegations against Free Voters boss Hubert Aiwanger. The opposition is already demanding consequences.

bavaria prime minister Markus Soder (CSU) has his deputy Hubert Aiwanger asked to immediately clarify allegations against him because of an anti-Semitic flyer from his school days. “These allegations simply have to be clarified now. And completely,” said Söder on Saturday on the sidelines of his visit to Augsburg. Hubert Aiwanger, meanwhile, has canceled his participation in the Plärrer parade.

The Southgerman newspaper had reported on the leaflet. Through a spokesman, the free voter chief shared SZ that he “didn’t produce anything like that” and would take legal action against this “smear campaign” in the event of publication.

Söder: “There are bad allegations in the room”

To that of the SZ reported leaflet, Söder said: “There are serious allegations in the room. This leaflet is inhuman, downright disgusting.”

At a request from German press agency Aiwanger did not react until Saturday noon. A spokesman for the Free Voters said Aiwanger and the Free Voters are not commenting on “this process” for the time being. Free voter parliamentary group leader Florian Streibl said on dpa-Request on Saturday but: “We will talk to him today.” The Free Voter spokesman then announced on Saturday that there would be a reaction later in the day. He left details open.

CSU boss Söder said to his coalition partner: “That’s why the central demand is now also on Hubert Aiwanger to simply clarify things and explain them publicly.” A new state parliament will be elected in Bavaria on October 8th. The CSU had always stated that it wanted to continue the coalition with the Free Voters.

The Greens faction leader calls for Aiwanger’s dismissal if the allegations prove true

Demands for consequences came immediately from almost all directions in politics. The SPD parliamentary group requested a special session of the Bavarian state parliament, which is on summer break. SPD faction leader Florian von Brunn said, according to a statement: “The leaflet is right-wing extremism of the lowest drawer, which denigrates the millions of victims of the Holocaust and the Nazi dictatorship in the worst possible way.”

“Horrible” appearances like in Erding have so far been dismissed as isolated events. “Apparently they are not,” von Brunn continued on Platform X.

Aiwanger is accused of populism

Aiwanger had already hit the headlines nationwide in June because of controversial statements at a rally in Erding. Among other things, he said there that the silent majority had to “take back democracy”. He was then – as several times before – accused of populism and then also a choice of words à la AfD.

Aiwanger, the strong man of the Free Voters in Bavaria and also nationwide, likes to see himself as a representative of what he calls the “normal population”, of farmers and craftsmen. In beer tents and at other appearances, he regularly railed against the Greens and the traffic light government. He lets accusations of being a populist roll off his feet. He will not be silenced, he says. His stated goal is to keep potential AfD voters from voting for the AfD and to “lure” them to the Free Voters. (AZ/dpa)
