Being attacked by a dog in a cage: Israel’s torture in Gaza and the peace mission in a state that does not yet exist (war, day 193)

The UN agency that deals with Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) presented a report this Tuesday in which it accuses the Israeli authorities of detaining and torturing several people near the Karem Abu Salem border, which separates Gaza, Israel and Egypt.
Since April 4, says UNRWA, Israel has released 1,506 detainees, including 43 children and 84 women. Survivors’ accounts point to human rights violations committed by Israel.

“These violations include people being assaulted while being forced to lie on a thin mattress on top of debris for hours, without access to food, water or toilets, and with their legs and arms bound with plastic bags.” , highlights the report.
Several Palestinians said they were forced into cages and then attacked by dogs. “Some detainees, including a child, had dog bite marks on their bodies”notes UNRWA.
Furthermore, Palestinian citizens were threatened with death – as were their family members – if they did not reveal information that the Israeli authorities considered relevant.
At the same time, Israel continues to block the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza: “Since the beginning of April, an average of 181 trucks loaded with aid have entered Gaza. This number remains far below operational capacity and the target of 500 trucks per day”, declared the UN specialized agency in a statement.

Italy offers troops for peacekeeping mission
If a Palestinian state recognized by the international community is created, Italy is willing to send troops to Palestine as part of a peacekeeping mission, the Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs said this Tuesday. “The Italian Government is strongly committed to peace”, assured Antonio Tajani.
“We are friends of Israel, but we want to work for peace, including through the possible deployment of troops if a Palestinian state is created, together with forces from other countries,” he said, calling for Israel’s restraint in its response to Iran. “I hope that there is no escalation”, said Tajani.
“Now we have to prevent the conflict from escalating, because we not only have tensions in Gaza, but also in the Red Sea”, he argued.

At the same time, Germany’s Foreign Minister traveled to Israel today with the aim of “avoiding further escalation” in the region. According to Annalena Baerbock, the European Union must apply new sanctions against companies that contribute to the manufacture of Iranian drones, which attacked Israel this weekend.
“In late autumn, I asked France and other EU partners to extend this drone sanctions regime to new types of equipment used by Tehran and its allies,” said the German minister.
“I hope we can finally take this step together as the EU,” Baerbock added.
