DEL Playoffs 2024: How does the mode work?
The pairings for the playoff games in the German Ice Hockey League (DEL) are determined according to the teams’ placement in the main round. The first playoff round is the start, in which the “best of three” rule is used. This means that a team only needs two wins to qualify for the next round.
From the quarterfinals onwards the mode changes to “Best of Seven”. This means that a team now needs four wins to win the current round. A key feature of this mode is that home advantage changes every game. These regulations are intended to enable teams to prepare for both short and longer playoff series.
Playoff rules of the “DEL season” 2024: Which teams will play against each other?
In the German Ice Hockey League playoffs, the matchups between teams are determined based on their placement in the main round of the regular season. Placement is initially based on the points achieved. In the event of a tie, the goal difference will be used. If this does not result in an order, the placement will be decided based on the goals scored. In the event of a tie between two or more teams, the direct comparison will be used. If three or more teams are tied, those teams’ scores will be counted against each other to create a new table. All places have been taken and the matches have been determined:
- Fishtown Penguins: The team out Bremerhaven played a strong season. They are currently first in the table with 104 points.
- Polar Bears Berlin: The Polar Bears are only two points behind the Fishtown Penguins. They have also gained a good lead in the table. In the Playoffs However, that no longer counts.
- Straubing Tigers: The Straubing Tigers also play safely in the Playoffs. The Bavarian team has scored 91 points so far this season.
- Grizzly’s Wolfsburg: The grizzlies are regularly in the Playoffsbut the last time it was enough to win was in 2009.
- EHC Red Bull Munich: The team out Munich is the reigning German champion and would certainly like to build on the successes of last season.
- Schwenninger Wild Wings: The team out Schwenningen is probably the biggest surprise this season. Last season the team only reached 12th place.
- Adler Mannheim: In the first round of the playoffs, the Mannheim team beat them with a total of 8:3 Nuremberg Ice Tigers enforced. This is the team, which is a founding member of the Germans ice Hockey League is also in the quarterfinals.
- ERC Ingolstadt: The Ingolstadt team was the last team to qualify for the quarter-finals Playoffs to qualify. They beat them in three games Cologne Sharks through. The club has been playing in the top German ice hockey league since 2002 and was last champion in 2014.
But how exactly are the pairings in the DEL playoffs? Here is all the information about the playoffs and their rounds:
1st playoff round:
The clubs in places 7 to 10 in the main round qualify for the 1st playoff round. The seventh in the main round meets the tenth and the eighth meets the ninth. The better placed player has home advantage in games one and three. The best of three rule applies, with two wins required to advance.
Other playoff rounds:
From the quarterfinals onwards, the “Best of Seven” rule applies in all playoff rounds. Four wins are needed to reach the next round or ultimately win the championship in the final. Home law changes here with every game.
The six best-placed teams in the main round and the two winners of the first playoff round are qualified for the quarterfinals. The four winners of the quarter-finals advance to the semi-finals, and the two winners of the semi-finals qualify for the final.
The pairings and the first home advantage in all playoff rounds depend on the placings of the qualified clubs in the main round. The best-placed player gets the last-placed player, the second-best-placed player gets the second-to-last, etc., with the better-placed player having the first home advantage.
