French territories reject passage of the Olympic flame

Paris France.- For economic reasons, some territories in France will not host the Olympic torch.
The Paris 2024 Olympic torch relay will begin its journey in France on May 8, 2024. The flame will arrive in Marseille and travel across the country for 68 days through 65 territories in the country.
The departments that will participate in the Olympic flame route had to pay 180 thousand euros to be part of the route. But the metropolis of Lyon and the Rhône department refused to be part of the tour, citing too high a cost demanded of the communities by the International Olympic Committee.
“Asking 180 thousand euros from each department does not make any sense. Some departments are smaller and others are less robust. It would have been more logical for the regions to organize the financing of the torches at the regional level to guarantee territorial equity,” declared Bruno Bernard , President of Lyon Metropole.
In the case of Hérault, Montpellier and Millau they shared the amount requested for the Olympic flame to pass through those places.
“We would have very much liked to welcome the flame. What we did not know was the cost of this passage,” said Chaynesse Khirouni, president of the departmental council of Meurthe-et-Moselle.
The Olympic flame will visit places such as Lascaux (southwest France), where there are caves with important cave paintings; the medieval fortress of Carcassonne (Occitania), the Palace of Versailles and the Loire Castles.
