The Euro-Mediterranean Observatory and social media in Greece reported this Friday that the Mediterranean country was hit by an earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale. No casualties or major damage were recorded.
Seismologist Gerassimos Papadopoulos, speaking to Greek public television, Ert, states that: “The telluric tremor was recorded at 09:12 local time (07:12 GMT) at a depth of 20 km, in a region where earthquakes are frequent”.
The person responsible indicates that, after this shock, two aftershocks followed, with magnitudes of 2.9 and 4.5.
The earthquakes were felt on the Estrófades islets, in the Ionian Sea, and also on the neighboring island of Zakynthos and the Peloponnese peninsula.
The Athens Observatory had, initially, reported two successive earthquakes, one of magnitude 5.2 and the other of 5.7, but the seismologist Gerassimos Papadopoulos admitted “a system error” and considered that only one earthquake had occurred. , magnitude 5.7 on the Richter scale.
Greece is located on major geological faults, and earthquakes occur frequently, particularly at sea, but generally without causing victims or major damage.
