The Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro, will travel, this Monday, to Madrid, to meet with his Spanish counterpart, Pedro Sánchez, in what is the first official visit of the new leader of the Executive.
By choosing Spain as the destination for his first official trip, the prime minister shows the “importance he gives to the historical and cooperative relationship” between Portugal and Spain, says a source from the Montenegro cabinet, cited by Lusa.
The same source also states that this meeting not only serves to prepare the next Portuguese-Spanish summit, which does not yet have a defined date, but also aims to “strengthen the position of the two countries in relation to the European Union”.
Madrid only indicated that Sánchez intends to discuss, with the Portuguese prime minister, the situation in the Middle East and the recognition of the Palestinian state.
The Spanish ruler committed to recognizing Palestine as a State in the first half of this year. Luís Montenegro stated, last Friday, in parliament, that he defends a two-state solution (Israel and Palestine).
