The number of old basic security recipients is increasing significantly. However, the increase is mainly due to refugee Ukrainians.
WIESBADEN epd | The number of recipients of basic security rose by 1.9 percent at the end of 2023 compared to the previous year. As the Federal Statistical Office announced on Wednesday in Wiesbaden, there was an increase of 22,000 cases to over 1.2 million people.
According to the information, the increase is mainly due to refugees from Ukraine who have been entitled to basic security since June 1, 2022 and are not covered by the Asylum Seekers Benefits Act. Their number increased by almost 19 percent from 73,060 in December 2022 to 86,775 in December 2023.
Adults who are permanently unable to work or who have reached the age limit according to Section 41 Paragraph 2 (SGB XII) and cannot secure their livelihood from their own income and assets are entitled to benefits.
Almost 690,000 (56.9 percent) of those receiving assistance received basic security in old age. This corresponds to an increase of 4.7 percent compared to the same month last year. Around 520,000 (43.1 percent) received the benefit due to permanent, complete disability. Their number fell by 1.6 percent compared to the same month last year.
