Renewables at sea will be debated at the beginning of the transition of portfolios in the Ministry of Environment and Energy

The Oceanic Renewables Summit 2024 was already decided before November 7, when the prime minister resigned and led to early elections, guarantees the president of the Portuguese Renewable Energy Association (APREN), which organizes this meeting. But, for Pedro Amaral Jorge, “it is important to keep this topic on the agenda” due to the “pertinence” it has in the goals that Portugal set out to achieve in renewables. Even more so when the transition of portfolios in the now Ministry of Environment and Energy is beginning and very close to June, the month in which the previous Government planned to launch the first auction for the installation of wind farms on the high seas.

The auction will therefore be one of the main topics to be debated at the conference taking place this Wednesday, April 17th, at the Champalimaud Foundation, in Lisbon. Especially because, says Pedro Amaral Jorge, “there is no decision regarding the auction model” to be launched as it was still being worked on by the previous Government.

On the table were two solutions: launching a single auction to allocate the right to explore maritime space and the right to access the submarine network that will connect wind farms to land, or two separate auctions, one for exploration and the other for the networks.

this was how much António Costa’s government aimed to allocate offshore wind power by 2030

Networks are, in fact, another topic under debate, especially because expanding the electricity distribution network has an impact on the tariff and, consequently, on the electricity bill and, therefore, it will be necessary to find a solution that costs less – or not at all. – both individuals and companies. In fact, according to Pedro Amaral Jorge, “they can only increase the tariff if consumption does not increase” and everything indicates that it will increase in the coming years because, with the energy transition underway, electricity will replace other polluting energy sources.

The conference will also discuss the topic of preserving the environment and biodiversity; the happy coexistence between wind farms, networks and fishing and also the potential for creating an industrial cluster that involves, among others, the construction sector, metalworking and Portuguese ports.

The networks [de ligação das eólicas no mar a terra] They can only increase the tariff if it does not increase consumption, but it also has to have a logical tariff design”, says Pedro Amaral Jorge

What is it?

It is a conference organized by APREN to which Expresso joins as a media partner and which aims to discuss everything that involves the installation of renewables at sea, not only wind, but also solar panels and wave energy equipment.
