Rui Tavares wants a minimum wage of 1,150 euros

He founded Livre and was never very controversial. But he is assertive, with fixed ideas. Livre’s program for the legislative elections on March 10 is ambitious and has more than 150 pages. And there are new features in this program. Rui Tavares defends the creation of “social inheritance”, which ends up being a type of savings account that aims to combat inequalities. The idea is to “introduce new instruments, such as social inheritance”, so that “in the next legislature it will be at the center of the debate and that it will be modeled by public entities in Portugal – Ministry of Social Security, together with academia and civil society – , to understand whether it is through a savings account that is created for each and every one born in Portugal, whether it is with savings certificates or whether it is through the tax on large inheritances”.

According to the leader of Livre, this measure will combat social inequalities so that, “between the ages of 18 and 35”, citizens can have access to this mechanism “adapted to the financial conditions of their families”. And they will give these people the possibility of having “a study plan, opening a small business, several friends getting together and opening a new company or paying or helping to pay the down payment on a house”.

With regard to the national minimum wage, Livre is the most ambitious party and proposes that it be 1,150 euros in 2028. But it also wants to match the PSP and GNR’s service and risk supplement to the PJ’s mission supplement and reach 10% of public housing.

Also noteworthy is the review of IRS rates and brackets, “the update of the reference value of the minimum existence and the specific deduction, ensuring that there is no indirect tax increase due to the fact that inflation is not incorporated into the limits of brackets and deductions of families.”

Livre adds that it also wants to “plan the convergence of low-value pensions with the national minimum wage by the end of the legislature” and also “review the formula for calculating social security pensions, through the sustainability factor, alleviating this risk factor”. in order to reduce the anticipated penalty”.

The left-wing party also shows its concern about housing and promises to “protect and expand the right to housing”. To this end, it proposes achieving 10% public housing, ensuring assistance with the purchase of the first home, implementing and expanding the New Generation of Cooperatives for the Promotion of Affordable Housing, inventorying and rehabilitating the public housing stock, increasing the number of vacancies in residences universities and social support for the accommodation of displaced higher education students, create the ‘Housing Desk’, reinforce the technical capacity of State services that work on housing, implement the Emergency Fund for housing, increase support for leases, among others.

With regard to health, for example, he wants to “review the remuneration of all health professionals”.

Looking at the posters placed all over the country, Livre bets on the color green – the color that identifies it – and the motto ‘Contract with the future’. And he guarantees that the proposals are for “a fairer, greener and sustainable Portugal”, as, in fact, the party has always excelled.

Despite not being very active on social media – mostly sharing videos of the debates – Rui Tavares is updating his followers, showing what he stands for and what he wants for the country. And, to give a ‘check-in’ from time to time. On Facebook, for example, he has more than 16 thousand followers. On Instagram he seems to be more active, although the type of posts are the same. He has almost 22 thousand followers and is the place where he shares his ideas and debates. One of the ideas he shares and wants for the country is a four-day work week.
