The Ukrainian Parliament approved a bill that expands civil mobilization, relying on incipient military manpower. Last week, Zelensky had already signed a bill that provided for the reduction of the minimum recruitment age, from 27 to 25 years old. In another bill, men who receive military discharge due to disability are required to undergo another medical evaluation. Videos are circulating on social media showing men taken from the streets, where they lived without shelter, to be recruited.

But parliamentarian Oleksandr Fedienko is convinced that the approval of the mobilization legislation sends a message that Ukraine is ready to recapture its territory in full. Oleksandr Pavliuk, commander of the ground forces, appealed to Ukrainians earlier this week to enlist in the army.

On the battlefield, Russia is slowly advancing east, and Ukraine is at a disadvantage, facing a shortage of artillery shells due to a slowdown in Western military assistance. Russian forces outnumber Ukrainian troops by between seven and 10 times in the eastern regions, admitted Ukrainian general Yuriy Sodol. “The enemy is seven to 10 times bigger than us, we lack manpower,” estimated Sodol, who commands troops in the Kharkiv, Donetsk and Luhansk regions.

It will be the mass use of guided bombs, containing foreign components, that will also be driving Russian advances. Around 500 bombs are fired per week, at least judging by a study made known by the Ukrainian Government. High explosive and fragmentation bombs, with a range of 40 to 60 km, are now considered a central threat on the front line, forcing Ukrainian forces to retreat. These weapons are fired by aircraft, and were responsible for the destruction of the city of Avdiivka.

Moscow launched a major attack on Ukraine’s energy grid infrastructure. Thursday morning in Kharkiv began with the sound of explosions. Following the attacks, 200,000 people were left without power. The national grid operator, Ukrenergo, said that in five regions several facilities were damaged. Volodymyr Zelensky said 40 missiles and 40 drones were launched overnight.
