Ski jumper Philipp Raimund managed a surprise at the European Games in Zakopane, Poland, by winning the bronze medal.
When jumping from the large hill, the 23-year-old finished only behind winner Dawid Kubacki (140.0 m/134.5 m) with jumps of 138.0 and 132.5 m Poland and the Austrian Jan Hörl (140.0/ 130.0). It was the second medal for the DSV team at the European Games, after Selina had also won bronze the day before.
“I didn’t expect that I would be so good here that I would get a medal,” said Raimund after the jumping. Due to his mixed jumps in the training course before the European Games, he did not come to Zakopane with a “good feeling”. Friday was also “very satisfied”. “When preparing for the winter, it’s definitely good to know where you stand.”
Some top jumpers were missing
In the absence of some top jumpers such as the Germans Markus Eisenbichler, Karl Geiger and Andreas Wellinger, Raimund had already presented himself in good form when jumping from the normal hill, but in fourth place he just missed the podium. The German team also took fourth place in the mixed team competition.
“I thought to myself, I won’t be fourth anymore”, Raimund described his thoughts before the last jump from the large hill. “I really have to say: Respect, he did a very good job,” praised national coach Stefan Horngacher. “I’m very happy with his development.”
