Sony will lay off 900 workers

Sony’s video games and digital entertainment division, Sony Interactive Entertainment, announced this Tuesday that it will lay off 900 workers worldwide, that is, the equivalent of around 8% of its workforce.
In a note, signed by Sony Interactive CEO Jim Ryan, the company explains that: “These are incredibly talented people who have been part of our success and we are very grateful for their contribution. However, the industry has changed immensely and we need to prepare ourselves for the future and the company for what is to come”.
Jim Ryan, who is expected to leave the company’s leadership this year, explained that the video games and entertainment division must meet the expectations of creators and players, seeking to “continue to drive future technology in video games”.
“We took a step back to ensure we are prepared to continue providing the best gaming experiences to the community,” he said.
To the shared document, a copy of the email sent to all workers is attached, which also details which workers will be impacted from all regions and several Playstation studios.
Jim Ryan also assured that the Playstation studios in London will definitely close, and it is also expected that there will be “reductions in the Firesprite studios” and other functions at Sony Interactive in the United Kingdom.
Sony Interactive Entertainment will award compensation to affected workers.
The layoffs announced today come a month after Microsoft said it would cut around 2,000 workers following its purchase of Activision Blizzard.
