TNI-Polri Begin to Deploy Troops, OPM: Paniai is Now a War Zone

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAYAPURA — The Free Papua Organization (OPM) declared the Meepago, Paniai, Central Papua area a war zone with the Indonesian National Army (TNI)-Polri. The West Papua National Liberation Army (TPNPB) OPM declared the war area following the murder carried out by the armed separatist group of Danramil Aradide Second Lieutenant (Letda) Oktavianus Sogalrey (OS) some time ago.
TPNPB-OPM Spokesperson Sebby Sambom in a press release delivered to Republica, Wednesday (17/4/2024) early morning said that after the shooting incident of Octavianus Sogalrey, the TNI-Polri deployed troops. The separatist group believes that the deployment of these troops was intended to carry out a retaliatory attack against the OPM which shot Lt. Oktavianus.

Sebby explained the situation presented by the separatist group in Paniai for the last few days. On Wednesday (10/4/2024) TPNPB-OPM troops carried out an attack on Lt. Oktovianus Sogolrey. Namely by shooting Danramil Aradide dead while crossing Jalan Trans Paniai-Intan Jaya.
The shooting was previously acknowledged by the TPNPB-OPM as a form of revenge for the death of Abubakar Kogoya, the OPM leader in Tembagapura, Intan Jaya in a firefight with the TNI joint task force on Thursday (4/4/2024). After the attack on Wednesday (10/4/2024), on Thursday (11/4/2024), the body of Lieutenant Oktavianus Sogolrey was evacuated to the Paniai Regional Hospital in Madi, and continued to Deiyai, for burial in Nabire.
On Saturday (13/4/2024) after the military funeral for the body of Lt. Oktavianus Sogolrey, the TNI and Polri who served in other areas, had their assignments shifted specifically to the Paniai area. “The mobilization of joint Indonesian military forces from various regions to pursue the leadership and troops of TPNPB-OPM Kodap XIII Paniai Kegepa Nipouda,” said Sebby.
Still on Saturday (13/4/2024), from TPNPB-OPM monitoring in Nabire it was reported that joint Indonesian military troops were at the gathering point at Hotel Jepara-2. “A total of 13 TNI military trucks are heading to Paniai under tight guard,” said Sebby.
According to Sebby, the joint TNI-Polri military troops, according to TPNPB-OPM observations, were alerted in two Meepago traditional areas, namely in Deiyai Regency and in Paniai Regency. From TPNPB-OPM monitoring, said Sebby, the joint TNI-Polri military also deployed troops using helicopters at Enarotali Airport in the capital city of Paniai.
