70 Percent of Slum Areas in South Jakarta Successfully Handled

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — The South Jakarta City Government has handled 70 percent of the slum Rukun Warga (RW) areas spread across 10 sub-districts and every year work is done to overcome these problems.
“What we are working on is water channels, environmental roads, street lighting, making gates in residential areas, especially slum RWs,” said Head of the South Jakarta (Jaksel) Public Housing and Settlement Area Department Imam Bahri in Jakarta, Friday (8/3/ 2024).
He said that in accordance with Governor Regulation Number 90 of 2018 concerning Improving the Quality of Settlements, integrated residential areas were being arranged in 90 slum RWs in South Jakarta. According to him, of the 90 RWs that are in the slum category, 70 percent have been handled by carrying out a number of improvements to get them out of the slum RW category.
“We have implemented some of it, so far the slum RWs have not been touched, we will do it. More than 70 percent has been handled and what we haven’t yet is we continue to work on it every year,” he said.
He added that the 90 slum RWs in South Jakarta are spread across 10 sub-districts, but not all sub-districts have RWs in the slum category. Imam said that the data for the 90 slum RWs was in accordance with what was reported by the Jakarta Province Central Statistics Agency (BPS) and had criteria to determine whether RWs were slum or not.
A total of 90 slum RWs are spread across 10 sub-districts, such as in Tebet Sub-district, namely in Pasar Manggis, Menteng Dalam, Bukit Duri and others. “So there are all 10 sub-districts, but the number varies,” he said.
In Gubernatorial Regulation Number 90 of 2018 concerning Improving the Quality of Settlements in the Context of Structuring Integrated Settlement Areas, it is stated that there are 445 RWs in DKI Jakarta which are included in the slum RW category. In the attachment to the gubernatorial regulation, it is stated that there are 15 slum RWs in very serious condition, 99 RWs in moderate level slums, 205 RWs in light levels and 126 RWs in very light conditions.
