US aid to Ukraine has a decisive influence on deterring China,

Joseph Wu, Taiwan’s foreign minister, said on Thursday that the US’s refusal to help Ukraine would strengthen China’s position and influence its decision to invade Taiwan. If Russia is able to occupy a large part of Ukraine and claim victory, the Taiwanese diplomat added, “it will be seen as a victory for authoritarian states, because Russia, China, North Korea and Iran are now connected to each other.”

Some Republican senators in the USA argue that China is a greater threat than Russia, and that the funding proposed for Ukraine should go to China’s countermeasures. But other Republicans in Congress and many Democrats make the same argument as Wu: that the security of Taiwan is tied to the security of Ukraine, because China will see weakness on the part of the United States – and a greater chance of success in a potential invasion of Taiwan – if Ukraine is defeated .

If the United States leaves Ukraine, the head of the Foreign Ministry of Taiwan said, China will “take it as a hint” that if it continues its aggression against Taiwan, “the United States and its allies will retreat.” According to him, Chinese officials think they will think: “Since Russia could do it, we can also do it.”
