April 17: Ukrainian language was made optional in schools

On April 17, 1959, the session of the Supreme Soviet of the Ukrainian SSR adopted the law “On strengthening the connection between school and life and on the further development of the system of public education in the Ukrainian SSR.”
The law stipulated that it was not necessary to study the Ukrainian language in schools. At the “requirement of parents and children”, the number of schools with the Ukrainian language of instruction was reduced. They ignored the study of Ukrainian language and literature in Russian-language schools. The number of hours of teaching Ukrainian literature and language in secondary special educational institutions has been reduced.
A new subject “History of the Ukrainian SSR” was introduced. It was studied in 7-8 grades either every week or once a week for six months.

Also, the law provided for the combination of training with productive work. From the age of 15-16, students had to be involved in hard socially useful work.
On March 18, 1917, the first gymnasium with the Ukrainian language of instruction was opened in Kyiv. The institution was named in honor of Taras Shevchenko. The initiative of the opening belonged to the members of the School Education Society. It arose in the same 1917 and worked on the organization of Ukrainian schools, which entailed significant difficulties.
