The ski jumping season 2022-23 ended today, the results and the course of the World Cup final in Planica were amazing. The Sunday (2.04) individual competition at Letalnica was won by Timi Zajc, who was only 0.1 points ahead of Anze Laniska. The Poles performed slightly below expectations. The best turned out to be Piotr Żyła, who took the 14th place and ended the season with a flight of over 240 m.
Sunday’s World Cup competition in Planica was like a grand finale of the season. The wind didn’t bother too much (and even helped), the best jumpers made very long jumps today, the jury, despite many flights around 240 m, did not lower the inrun, the judges finally did not skimp on high marks. “20s” were common, and Anze Lanisek even got 4 (out of 5) in the first series. As a result, he took the full pot for style. The jumps are perfect (239.5 m). This is what ski jumping should look like! Not only in the last competition of the season.
The Slovene, who the day before in the second round of the team competition, performed below expectations, which made the hosts lose the victory, had a great motivation to redeem himself. At the halfway point he was the leader, 1.6 points ahead of Domen Prevc and 2.9 ahead of Stefan Kraft. This time, the winner of the Crystal Ball – Halvor Egner Granerud, who was only 23rd, did not count in the fight for the podium.
The Poles in the first series did a solid job, but without the flash we were hoping for. Aleksander Zniszczol was the best at the halfway point – 14th place. Piotr Żyła (he had problems just after leaving the threshold) and Kamil Stoch (also a mistake in this element) were classified in the 18th position; Paweł Wąsek was ranked 25th.
We also saw long jumps in the final series. Granerud started with 237 m and finally clearly improved his position.
Żyła had probably the greatest joy from the flight. In very favorable wind conditions, he landed as much as 20 m further than before – 241.5 m! It was the second distance in the entire competition, which also allowed him to move up in the classification to 14th place.
Stoch’s 231.5 m gave him a slight jump up the list (15th). Wąsek, which did not reach 200 m, dropped in the ranking (28th). Zniszczol, the best of the Poles at the halfway point, also ended the season on a nice note – 235.5 m is his personal record. And it probably doesn’t matter to him that he fell in the final ranking (17th) behind Stoch and Żyła.
An incredible thing was done by Timi Zajc. From the beam lowered on request by as many as two positions, he flew to 234 m, ahead of the next rival by over 23 points. Thanks to a risky maneuver (and a perfect execution) he not only jumped on the podium, but also celebrated the victory.
The next ones – Prevc and Kraft – didn’t beat him. The leader Lanisk also failed to do so, although he achieved 242 m (the longest distance of the day), he lost to his teammate by… 0.1 points.
The Crystal Globe for the triumph in the World Cup classification was already secured by Granerud (today 13th). The Little Globe was won by Kraft for flying alone.
