The Judiciary Police (PJ) announced, this Thursday, that a man suspected of belonging to a “highly organized” international cocaine trafficking group was arrested in the Algarve. The suspect had an international arrest warrant, issued by Brazilian justice.
In a statement, the Judiciary states that the 32-year-old man was located and detained in the Algarve, by the PJ’s Criminal Information Unit, “after research and operational investigations that took place over several days”.
The detainee, as indicated by the police authority, was part of an international cocaine trafficking network, and was responsible for preparing the journey of cocaine ‘couriers’ that departed from Rio de Janeiro, in Brazil, bound for Europe.
The man, who appeared before the Évora Court of Appeal, in Alentejo, could be sentenced to 15 years in prison for his crimes.
The Court of Appeal of Évora is the judicial body with jurisdiction to decide on his extradition, having decided that the detainee remains in preventive detention until the conclusion of the process.
