Following Iran’s attack on Israel, EU Foreign Ministers held an extraordinary online meeting. EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policies Josep Borrell held a press conference after the meeting. Borrell stated that the already tense situation in the region escalated with the unprecedented air attack carried out by Iran using UAVs and missiles on the Iran-Israel line.

Referring to the statements of United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Borell said that “the region is on the brink of the abyss”. Borrell said, “We have to move away from the brink of the abyss. We are faced with a kind of chess game. One attacks the other. At the end of these steps, we will be faced with a full-blown war, and this is not something we want, there is no need for such a thing in the region,” he said.

Emphasizing that neither the world nor the people in Gaza want such a thing, because in such a case the war will not stop and the suffering of the people in Gaza will increase, Borrell said, “For this reason, the ministers took a strong stance today and called on all actors in the region to move away from the brink of the abyss to avoid falling into the abyss.” ” said.

Emphasizing that this issue will be discussed in the upcoming EU meetings that will start tomorrow, Borrell stated that all parties strongly condemned Iran’s attacks in today’s video call, which was organized for political orientation.

“SOME COUNTRIES DEMANDED PERMANENT RESTRICTIONS AGAINST IRAN”

Borrell said, “At the same time, member states once again demonstrated their support for the EU’s security in Israel. We also agree that further escalation of tension should be avoided and all actors should be called for moderation. Following this meeting, we will increase our contacts with our key partners in the region. Some member states have requested the expansion of restrictive measures against Iran. “I will forward this request to the External Affairs Service (EEAS) for necessary action regarding sanctions,” he said.

Emphasizing that the proposal will expand the sanctions regime against Iran providing unmanned aerial vehicles to Russia, and that this may also include provisions that will cover the supply of missiles to Iran-backed groups in the Middle East, Borrell said that these proxy groups will operate on the Lebanese border, Yemen, Iraq and Syria. He stated that it consists of groups that use these missiles in Turkey.

Emphasizing his support for the proposal, Borrell announced that diplomats will work on the issue and ministers will discuss the issue once again at the ordinary meeting of EU Foreign Ministers to be held in Luxembourg on Monday, April 22.
