“Anyone who knows Carcavelos wine from Villa Oeiras realizes that this is very different”, guarantees Alexandre Lisboa. The technical coordinator of the Villa Oeiras Vine and Wine Project, from the Oeiras City Council, refers to the special edition Villa Oeiras Guitarras do Marquês Colheita white 2019 (€40), the fortified wine from Carcavelos associated with the “Guitar Barrel Project” . The aging of this wine reference lasted seven years in Portuguese oak barrels. This aging process continued for another four years in a 1,000 liter barrel made from mahogany dating back to the 18th century, built as part of the “Guitar Barrel Project”.
But the history associated with Villa Oeiras Guitarras do Marquês Colheita white 2019 dates back to 2018. In May of that year Alexandre Lisboa read an interview in a national newspaper about a group of six luthiers that they had purchased eight tons of 18th century mahogany, “probably from South America and which would have belonged to the cellar of the Palácio do Marquês de Pombal”, he states. The goal was to make six unique guitars. The mentor of this purchase is Adriano Sérgio. O luthier Portuguese brought together German Portuguese luthiers Ulrich Teuffel and Nikolaus Huber, North American Michael Spalt, Swiss Claudia & Claudio Pagelli, luthiers recognized international artists, who have already created for big names in world music, such as ZZ Top or the North American jazz singer and guitarist George Benson.
Villa Oeiras Guitar Barrel
In view of this coincidence, the Municipality of Oeiras, through Alexandre Lisboa, proposes the purchase of a part of mahogany, to completely restore a 7,000 liter barrel from the Villa Oeiras internship cellar. This is located in the Palácio do Marquês de Pombal, in Oeiras, where Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo himself, better known as Marquês de Pombal, began the production of Carcavelos wine in the 18th century. This joint work between the municipality and six luthiers also resulted in the production of a 1,000-liter barrel.
At the same time, the Oeiras City Council challenges the six luthiers to build the guitars. Each one is designed and produced by each of the luthiers mentioned. This sextet of musical instruments created within the context of the “Guitar Barrel Project” is presented on May 14, 2023, within the scope of “À Prova em Oeiras”. The moment is marked by the screening of a documentary alluding to the production process of the six guitars, the barrel and the barrel, made from mahogany.

Regarding the Villa Oeiras Guitarras do Marquês Colheita white 2019, Alexandre Lisboa clarifies that the skin fermentation to which it was subjected “will give us a structure that allows it to have longevity without compromising the fruit or acidity” and highlights the “medium-reddish tone. In the mouth, it is intense, caramelized, very spicy and with a slight bitterness at the end, which gives it an interesting character.” These attributes are also due “to the very striking terroir and the Atlantic influence exerted by the sea breeze that gives elegance to the wine, endowed with an incredible intensity of character, concentration and structure. The finish is fresh, a characteristic that balances the sugar” of this Carcavelos wine, adds the technical coordinator of the Villa Oeiras Vine and Wine Project.

The special edition of Villa Oeiras Guitarras do Marquês Colheita white 2019 is available in 2,000 1/2 liter bottles arranged in a wooden box, with a brochure explaining the “Guitar Barrel Project”. This set is complemented by a small mahogany piece with the symbol created by the six luthierswho, in this way, combined art with wine, to toast on special occasions, such as the awarding of prizes from the Boa Cama Boa Mesa Guide 2024 or, by the way, more wine projects, such as the next novelty at Villa Oeiras, about which Alexandre Lisboa says: “at the end of next May there will be another novelty. This is a very special Carcavelos wine.”
