Condemning the Burning of the Koran in Sweden, PBNU: Tarnishes Tolerance

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID,JAKARTA — Chairman of the Nahdlatul Ulama Board (PBNU) for Religious Affairs, KH Ahmad Fahrurrozi (Gus Fahrur) strongly condemned the burning of the Koran in front of the Sodermalm Great Mosque, Stockholm, Sweden, during the Eid al-Adha Day on Wednesday (28) /6/2023). According to Gus Fahrur, the burning of holy books at the moment of Eid al-Adha tarnished the tolerance of world religions.
“We strongly condemn and condemn the act of brutal vandalism that was carried out in Sweden, burning the Koran is an evil act of blasphemy against the holy book of Muslims and hurts and tarnishes religious tolerance in the world,” said Gus Fahrur when contacted Republika.co.idFriday (30/6/2023).
He said freedom of expression is a fundamental part of democracy. However, he said, it must be done in a polite and responsible manner. “Burning holy books is a very disgraceful and impolite act. We strongly reject behavior and utterances of hatred and extremism that undermine peace and tolerance between religious communities,” said Deputy Secretary General of the Central MUI.
Gus Fahrur also appealed to the Muslim community in Indonesia to remain calm in responding to the burning of the Koran in Sweden. He also supports the attitude of the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemenlu) to protest against the Swedish government over the incident.
“In order for Indonesian Muslims to remain calm and not be emotionally provoked by this provocation, we support the government through the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs submitting a protest note to the Swedish government,” said Gus Fahrur.
“We support the attitude of the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs which has issued a stance strongly condemning the act of vandalism,” explained the Caretaker of the ANNUR 1 Islamic Boarding School in Bululawang Malang.
As is known, blasphemy against Islam and the Koran is happening again in Sweden. This time a man tore and burned the Koran outside the central Stockholm mosque on Wednesday (28/6/2023). Worse, not only burning, the action continued with wiping shoes and wrapping pork using Koran sheets.
Hundreds of people witnessed the blasphemy of the Muslim holy book. Demonstrators also joined in shouting and talking into megaphones.
A protest supporter chanted “let it burn” as the holy book burned. Some of the people who were present protested the action chanting “Allahu Akbar” to protest the arson.
Police have charged the man with the burning of the Koran with agitating against an ethnic or national group. Representatives of the Stockholm mosque were disappointed by the police’s decision to grant permission to carry out the protest on Eid al-Adha.
