Dawid Kubacki won the gold medal of the European Games Krakow-Małopolska 2023 in ski jumping. He turned out to be the best in the Sunday (July 1) competition on the large hill (Wielka Krokiew in Zakopane) on mattings. This is the only disc won by Poles in IE in this discipline.
Let us remind you that Kubacki’s last winter season ended prematurely. He returned home because his wife Marta was hospitalized with serious cardiac problems. The story ended well, Kubacki returned to training and now also on the podium of a great event.
“For me, it’s a joyful moment, especially after everything that’s happened. I think it’s as joyful as the fact that I could return to this training and go to training camps with the boys. I had the prospect of jumping at all. Now it’s such a sweetening of the whole situation that what I do, I do well – he admitted.
He added: – If I had to evaluate this competition, I really enjoyed jumping from the first jump. What was happening on the small hill (10th place on Średnia Krokiew two days earlier – note) was forgotten. There, indeed, the head had no connection with the legs, and they were tired, free. I just felt it and tried to make up for it with other muscles, and unfortunately it doesn’t work in jumping – said Kubacki. – Here from the beginning it was quite decent, then there was better and better cheering, better and better atmosphere on the hill, a bit of adrenaline related to the competition. Satisfied my hunger for good jumping.
After the first series, Kubacki was the runner-up, losing 1.1 points to the leading Austrian, Jan Hoerl. Considering the flagship discipline of ski jumping in Poland and the fact that the results in the European Games so far have been below expectations, without a medal, was there pressure?
– There were no such thoughts, I knew what I had to do and I stuck to it. I approached this jump from the march, because I think that with my experience and mental work that I have done, I am able to approach it this way. Without calculations, without looking at what rivals are doing. Well, maybe apart from the players from our team, because it’s always tracked – whether he’s leading or you have to jump over him. Regardless of what others are doing, I can’t go further if I don’t do mine, so I need to focus on my job. I think I’ve done that job in this competition. After the small hill I was unsatisfied, because at the last training camp I had a really good time jumping, and in the first competition here it looked dull. I’m leaving here with a medal, it’s ok.
In the first television interviews after the competition, Kubacki dedicated the gold medal to his wife Marta. Later he changed his mind. – After a short reflection, I would prefer to dedicate it to all doctors from the Silesian Center for Heart Diseases, for their hard work every day – he said.
Looking at what has been happening in his life recently, the triumph in the European Games can be treated as a “world championship”. Kubacki already has the gold from this event (in Seefeld in 2019). Will this disc with IE in Zakopane, taking into account the non-sporting circumstances, be equally valuable?
– It’s hard to compare emotions between these events. Each competition and victory is a new story, different emotions, a different stage in life. I can say that every victory tastes the same, even if it’s different.
The competition on the large hill was held in different conditions than before on the normal hill. This time the fans were good, the players were accompanied by the loud cheering of several thousand spectators. In addition, there was a sporting success, i.e. a celebration of jumping – although in the middle of summer – we succeeded.
– You can say that this is my home hill. Every victory here, on Wielka Krokiew, touches the heart. This is something we as players love. And looking at the winter World Cup, this applies not only to Polish players. The atmosphere on the hill is outstanding, it cannot be compared to anything else – emphasized Kubacki.
After his successes, Piotr Żyła usually talks about celebrating with the Golden Pheasant. What about Kubacki?
– I don’t know if I have it at home. Maybe there will be something golden – smiled the champion of the European Games 2023.
