New Delhi. A Delhi court on Monday said it will continue hearing on April 20 the bail plea of former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia in a money laundering case related to the defunct excise duty policy.
Special Judge Kaveri Baweja of Rouse Avenue Court heard the arguments of Sisodia’s lawyer and the counsel appearing for CBI and ED. The judicial custody of the AAP leader was earlier extended till April 18. Earlier, ED had accused Sisodia and other accused persons of delaying the hearing of the case.
Sisodia’s bail plea was filed by his lawyer Mohit Mathur, alleging delay in completing the investigation in the case. It was claimed that no evidence had been found linking his client to the alleged bribe money in the case.
He had argued that there was no evidence of any loss to the public exchequer or private consumers from the alleged proceeds of crime. Mathur also stressed on the issue of delay in the trial. He said the Supreme Court order allowing Sisodia to approach the court is six months old and the investigation should have been completed by now.
Citing the bail granted to Benoy Babu, another accused in the case, Mathur argued for Sisodia’s bail, saying he was no longer in an influential position.
He also stressed that Sisodia fulfilled the triple test laid down by the Supreme Court for bail and urged for a speedy trial.
Mathur further said that Sisodia’s eligibility for bail has been established as per the Supreme Court guidelines, he has fulfilled all the necessary conditions and there is no apprehension of abuse of liberty.
Both ED and CBI are investigating Sisodia’s role.
Earlier, the CBI counsel had told the court that the investigation was at a critical stage and releasing Sisodia on bail could hamper the investigation.
