New Delhi, April 12 (HS). The Election Commission has taken a major decision related to providing voting facilities to Kashmiri migrants in the general elections-2024. The Commission has eliminated the cumbersome process of filling Form-M for the displaced people of the valley living in Jammu and Udhampur.
Additionally, for migrants residing outside Jammu and Udhampur (for whom Form M will continue to be submitted), ECI has authorized self-verification of the certificate attached with Form-M. This has removed the problem of getting the certificate verified by a Gazetted Officer.
The Commission took this decision today in a meeting chaired by Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar with Election Commissioners Gyanesh Kumar and Dr. Sukhbir Singh Sandhu.
It is noteworthy that the Commission had received various representations from several Kashmiri migrant groups on difficulties faced in filling Form-M. Displaced persons face additional bureaucratic hurdles compared to other voters due to the Form-M process and the process of filling Form-M is often complex and cumbersome, requiring specific documents, proof of migration status and verification by a gazetted officer. Is required.
The Commission says all 22 special polling stations (21 in Jammu and 1 in Udhampur) will be individually mapped into camps/zones, ensuring that each zone has at least 2 special polling stations.
