Dr. Adel Abdel Azim, head of the Agricultural Research Center, said that Egyptian cotton stands at the top of the quality of cotton in the world, as it is number one in the world in terms of quality standard, and number 2 in the world in terms of production volume.
This came during the plenary session of the Senate, chaired by Counselor Abdel Wahab Abdel Razek, Speaker of the Council, today, Tuesday, to discuss the report of the joint committee from the Agriculture and Irrigation Committee and the Office of the Financial, Economic and Investment Affairs Committee on a study on “Egyptian cotton cultivation – challenges and incentives for improving the investment climate.”
Abdel Azim added, “Indeed, we were growing about 2 million acres of cotton, but despite the decline in the cultivated area, our production represents about 20% of the global production of long-staple cotton in the world, which is a good percentage,” adding that there are 5 major countries that produce the largest Quantities of cotton around the world, led by India, which produces about 25% of the global production volume.
He continued: “Egypt began registering its first variety of cotton in 1921, and has so far succeeded in registering 99 varieties. We used to grow cotton, not manufacture it, and import cotton to manufacture spinning and weaving, and now we have a plan that actually began in 2015, in which a number of ministries and concerned authorities participate.” To coordinate cotton cultivation, manufacturing and export.
He added: “We aim to prepare a clear map that includes clear data on the quantities required for manufacturing and required for export, and thus be available in agriculture every season.”
