Following the unsuccessful result in the local elections held on March 31, calls for resignation of İYİ Party Chairman Meral Akşener were on the agenda. Making a statement on April 1, Akşener announced that she would take her party to an extraordinary elective congress. İYİ Party will hold its extraordinary elective congress on April 27.
AKŞENER’S DEPUTY WAS A CANDIDATE FOR GENERAL PRESIDENT OF İYİ PARTY
İYİ Party Deputy Chairman Mehmet Tolga Akalın announced that he was a candidate for the chairmanship at the İYİ Party congress. “IYI Party is not a leadership party that depends on individuals for its fate,” said Akalın, adding, “It is the party of the ‘Great Turkish Nation’, which represents the desire of Turkish nationalists to rule the state.” he said.
Highlights from Akalın’s statement are as follows:
“The fact that this political movement is governed with inconsistent and emotional decisions, disregarding its acquis, memory and mind, is the biggest reason for this great and heavy defeat we are facing.
I am a historical witness and aware of the prices paid and the sacrifices made by our comrades who contributed to this political movement at any point in our political struggle, who were treated unfairly but still fought tirelessly.
“We are coming to deliver their rights, to reward them for their efforts, and to say goodbye to those we could not.”
